Curbside collection changes coming

13 September 2024

Big changes are coming to curbside collection across the Cowichan Valley this spring. Residents here in North Cowichan as well as in Duncan and Cowichan Valley’s electoral areas (CVRD) will receive new collection carts as part of a move to modernized waste collection.

People in the Cowichan Valley are encouraged to learn which municipality services their home and find out details for that program, as there are differences in timing and details.

What’s changing?

  • Automated collection trucks: These new trucks use mechanical arms to lift and empty carts, making collection safer for workers and more efficient.
  • New collection carts: Households will receive new carts designed for automated collection.
  • Yard waste: Yard waste will now be collected in addition to kitchen waste.
  • Service differences by area:
    • Duncan: Switching to a fully automated curbside collection system.
    • North Cowichan: Recycling will still be collected manually for now, but garbage and organics will be automated. Bear-resistant carts will be available for a fee.
    • CVRD: Expanding automated collection to more areas and introducing bear-resistant carts at no extra cost. Monthly curbside glass collection will also be added later this year.
